notes: Saturday 9/23/17 Paul McCartney- Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
What can you say? There are legends...and then there is Paul McCartney. Having not seen Paul since 1993, I saw him for my fourth time ever this past weekend. The short of it was that I liked the show- though I think I liked the excitement I felt the first time I saw him in Toronto in 1989 better. My experience had some pros and some cons, but mostly pros. The show started at 8pm sharp and after a brief intro, Paul and the band took us on a musical journey through the mists of time. Opening with A Hard Days Night, they really didnt let up for just shy of 3 hours. No one wants to hear the new stuff, but everyone understands why he plays it. In the 39 songs of the evening there were enough good ones to forgive a few newer selections. The Carrier Dome has never sounded great (except for Pink Floyd) and tonight was no exception. Our seats were located under a cement overhang that made handclaps sound like we were sitting in a box. With McCartney, you never know what you are going to get- neighborwise. That is to say, at most shows you may find yourself sitting next to a talker or a clapper, but with so much of Pauls catalog being songs that just beg for singing along, you could find yourself sitting next to someone who just cant control themselves- regardless of what the people around them are doing. Luckily, we didnt have too many singers near us. The occasional clapper and a couple of annoying conversationalists behind us, but I recognize, it could have been much worse. Ill take it. As the band played on, it was a bit warm in the room. I heard that the upper levels were unrelentingly hot, though thankful I wasnt sitting there. At some point about ¾ of the way through we got a little bit of a reprieve. The dome roof is designed to be kept up using air pressure. Crowds use revolving doors to enter the building and your ears will pop when you go in. It is interesting when you leave though, as they open the double doors to let many people out at a time, versus the revolving doors, and you actually get forced out by a continual gust of wind. Our section was located near one of these exits and during Hey Jude all of the sudden we started feeling some significant air movement and as I thought about it, I realized they mustve opened the doors behind us that the pressurized air was whipping past us on its way out the door. Small comfort to the heat problem, but the wind (at any speed wreaks havoc with my mics). So, be aware that much of the last 1/4 of the show is marred by the wind. I would say, it was a good and enjoyable show that would have been better if it was cheaper or closer to home. I probably dont need to see Paul again, but will be happy to say I did see him when I did.
If you have masters that you would like to share, but lack the tools, time, or know-how, please contact me and I will be happy to discuss them with you. thanks.
If anyone has any of these shows, can you please post or contact me privately? Thank you.
